They connect the largest coal mine in Latin America with a coal port and subsequently with every household in Germany. The long-term project Canary in a Garden | Pueblos Espejos is a dialectically constructed examination of the neo-extractivist structures connecting the two regions. Most of these villages do not have enough water, have no fertile soil and do not comply with the agreements previously made. They are examples of the systematic exploitation and control of the region, its population and ecosystems by the mining company. Human encroachment on nature has created new landscapes and irretrievably destroyed old ones. Still the giant teeth of the massive excavators dig deep into the earth, creating vast deserts while elsewhere the same deserts are being flooded creating Europe’s biggest artificial lake landscape. On its shores new destinations for tourists and local recreation areas are being created, waiting for tourists. State of the Region is an ongoing long-term photographic study of urban and rural spaces as natural and human habitats and the different processes of structural change that are shaping them. <img upper-middle class neighborhoods rising up on the outskirts of Barranquilla.&nbsp; As I walked around the gated communities, I was overcome by a feeling of artificiality and isolation. The rhythm of these settlements seems to have sprung from a computer, cold and calculated, pragmatically following a purely economic benefit. Who lives here? What grows between the right angles, the elongated lines, the mirrored windows? A neighborhood? Relationships? Exchange? Encounters?The series examins photographically the concepts we base the creatinon of urban spaces on meant for our coexistence. While the series was on display around the neighborhood's central square, I had a chance to have many conversations and encounters with residents. The whole project was built around exchange and confrontation with the many different perspectives and experiences lived daily by both long-established residents and younger generations. In 2021 a Quartier-management was put in place to monitor the development of the neighborhood and have a positive impact through community activities. This is common in areas of the city that are in danger of developing into a “Brennpunkt” (places with for example an above average crime rate, high social tensions). The Letters from Nahariya project is on hold for now but may continue at some point in the future to reflect on how the neighborhood has changed. <img width="1920" height="1440" width_o="1920" many parts of the world, especially fueled during the Corona pandemic. As it is still a relatively young industry, workers are often poorly paid and otherwise exploited, especially when working for larger corporations. The first trade unions have been forming since the late 2010s and are fighting for the protection of workers' rights. The body of work Pu Drop Repeat&nbsp;follows two sides of this fast developing form of labour. On the one side there are the food couriers working for companies such as Lieferando and Wolt who are struggling to unionize as the companies themselves have no interest in facilitating any infrastructure that would help to enforce workers' rights. One rider I talked to described his work as solitary, as he starts every shift from home and barely has any contact to other riders. The other side of the story are the self organized riders from the Khora collective (which since has stopped excisting), who often have a great passion for bicycle culture and who regularly meet after work or during their break. For them working as bicycle food couriers is part of an identity, forming a community that opposes the capitalistic concept of larger companies. <img width="3937" height="5897" width_o="3937" By contrast, Tegel, then a military airport, had been built in just 90 days. I repeatedly roamed through the neighborhoods on foot in the summer of 2018. In the process, I first focussed on the question of what relationship people and the city have to the omnipresent air traffic. Those who could afford it left their homes only for essential purchases. In that time each of us only left the house five times taking a cab to the supermarket and back. The street vendors were often our only real contact with the outside world. So apart from documenting our daily life in lockdown we decided to work on the project "Echando Pa'lante" to document and give visibility to the many people risking so much to make ends meet. The portraits are testimonies to their hardship during the pandemic, which is symptomatic of many problems that go far beyond the then corona crisis in the country. Uncertainty, Anxiety, the distortion of what we perceive as time, social isolation and more. Items like masks, desinfectant, gloves or soap became omnipresent in almost everyone’s life and will forever be connected to the pandemic for everyone who experienced it. <img width="1080"
